Chichester Autumn Show 3rd October 2010

Did it rain - Yes. Was it a washout - Absolutely Not

Congratulations to the 50 or so cars and owners that braved the typical English weather, especially the autojumblers who tried their best but were definately not going to win against the rain. There was a very mixed selection of cars across the age range from 40's commercials to modern Jaguars from the JEC display. With a good showing at the tea and burger bar, most people ignored the weather and wandered around and chatted, discussing the finer points of classic ownership (and probably how to seal those little leaks that appear at this time of year).

The weather did curtail our normal timing with the raffle being abandoned from the start as displaying the raffle items was going to be impossible and we brought the prize giving forward as the weather was getting worse. Well done for everyone who gathered around to clap the winners.

Dunsfold Wings and Wheels - 29th August 2010

SCS attended this day of planes and cars with 10 cars representing the club. The day started early as car clubs have to be in place by 8:30.

The weather - August Bank Holiday weather - slight rain on the way, wind, cloud with promises of sunshine and rain!. Well we got it all including a very heavy downpour just as the Red Arrows were waiting to take off - also initiating a mass rush from people with roofs off - 20 mins later they did take off and did a brilliant display. The promised sun did arrive much later in the afternoon and by the end of the day there was no a cloud in the sky. There where a good selection of cars from other clubs (modern and classic) and the 'wheels' part consists (as well as clubs) of a variety of cars tearing down the runway - including several from the Brooklands collection.

Worthing Rugby Club Show - 8th August 2010

The day started bright and got better – always a good sign. The number of cars attending exceeded all expectations with some 200+ classics lining up in the sunshine. There was a good turnout from the auto-jumblers and stands from charities. Loads of conversation and friendly exchange of information on a wealth of car related subjects as well as probably a wider range of other subjects – this being normal for a Southern Classics meet. The judging was a challenge as there were many worthy cars for the class sections but there eventually decisions were made with a range of winners from an early Bentley to Ford Anglia, Triumph Spitfire and a Burlingham Kitcar. A full list will be published in the next club newsletter.

The raffle as usual attracted a selection of varied prizes and as a bonus we had an auction as the winners of the Charity Evening prize of 2x tickets for the Goodwood Revival donated by Lord March could not go so asked that they be auctioned and funds sent to the Dame Vera Lynn Trust to add to the sum collected on the Charity. As we had a representative from the Trust (Bob Mayston) to present our prizes he added two tickets for the forthcoming “Tunes of Glory” musical spectacular at Ardingly Showground and the winner would also be introduced to Dame Vera. The auction added £170 to the sum collected on the Charity Evening night (see below).

So a good day was had by all and if you weren’t able to make it the next one is at Chichester College on 3rd October (See Events for more detail).

Annual Charity Evening - 15th July 2010

Southern Classics holds an annual Charity Evening in order to raise funds for our selected Charity – this year it was for the Dame Vera Lynn Trust for Children with Cerebral Palsy. The meet was at The Fox at Patching, the weather was, shall we say, questionable – a bit cloudy, a bit blowy and it wouldn’t have surprised anyone if it rained – but luckily it didn’t.

Approx 60 members came in 27 classics so it was a good evening. It was helped as the landlord allowed us to use the marquee to eat the excellent BBQ supplied by the Fox so we were able to stay longer than the weather would have suggested. As usual John Leaney provided a challenging completion with photos of headlights and surrounding areas which we had to identify make and model – fun was had by all – there was even a tie.

The car most wanted to be taken home by was Phil Norths lovely Jaguar XK150.

But the important part – we raised £305 on the evening, to which there was added another £21 collected at the skittles evening held a few weeks earlier (another club activity).

We will hold the Charity Evening again next year so come along – it is for a good cause and a nice social evening. Watch 'Events' for details of the 2011 date.

Bewl Water Show - 6th June 2010

A good time was had at the Bewl Water show in June. Around 100 cars turned up, despite distinctly iffy weather forecasts, and enjoyed a generally lovely day (we had a shower sometime around lunchtime).

Unfortunately parking was not to the normal ‘by year’ standard as people had parked in our reserved area long before we arrived and a huge inflatable pool for childrens entertainment (But nothing to do with us). However, with careful rearrangement we managed to meet most people’s requests to be near their friends and clubs.

One couple (Skoda Club members) had driven down from North of the Thames (Essex) just to be with us. Hopefully we’ll see them again at another function. We gained several new members , one of whom brought the excellent Escort which won the Courtney Cup (our annual special award for the most outstanding car at the Bewl Water Show. It was good to see so many old and new friends of the club.

We have been promised that the large grass field we have had for some years in the past will be back in use next year and so we should be able to return to our ‘roots’ and have the large area again.
